The Questionnaire with Alex Day aka nerimon / By Dotan Schachter
Jun 9th, 2010 • Categories: Comedians, Musicians, Random Questionnaires, YoutubersWhat are you doing these days?
Generally, I just sit around, watching each minute of my day go by with an increasing contempt for my own existence. I can waste days and days watching Sex And The City and eating yoghurt. Not having a ‘real-life’ job is brilliant, because I’m able to live off the money my music makes, but it also means I get fuck all done.
What turns you on creatively?
I love the process of forming ideas. From that first initial spark of something new, being able to develop it and give it a name feels incredibly liberating, because it’s all just thinking and dreaming, and all the hard work of actually creating it gets put off until later.
If you were a mind-reader whose mind would you like to read?
We need to establish boundaries, cos my answer would vary wildly depending on what the rules are. Can I read the minds of the dead? Cos then I’d just get into John Lennon and channel his songwriting to become massively successful. And is it just a one-time look around, or do I get long-term access? I’d probably pick one of the great writers or thinkers I admire – Russell T Davies, Steve Jobs – so I can really understand how to be fantastic at my job.
If you could travel in time, which era would you visit?
I’d always pick the future. I know what happened in the past, so living it doesn’t give me much pleasure, but I have no idea what’s in the future. I’d probably go past the end of my life, too, cos that’s a world I’ll never see – one hundred or two hundred years from now. And then maybe I’d release a film like Minority Report that predicts the future (seriously, that film was so accurate it’s suspicious).
What is your favorite sound?
I never get tired of the noise my iPhone makes when it locks and unlocks, because it makes an actual padlock locking noise. That’s genius. Oh, on the same subject, I also like it when my phone rings – my ringtone used to be the engines of the TARDIS, but I just changed it to the latin mix of ‘Still Alive’ that plays on the radios in Portal, so that’s a fun novelty that’s yet to wear off.
What is the album or song that influences you the most?
There have been a few. American Idiot opened my world up beyond pop music; Mezmerize/Hypnotize opened me up to metal; Costello Music brought me indie music; and now The Fame and The Fame Monster are taking me back to pop music and reminding me that if it’s done right it’s fucking fantastic.
Who would you like to collaborate with? And why?
If I could pick anyone, I’d probably make a music video in which I transformed into Robert Pattinson. Just because I could. And I’d get to meet Robert Pattinson, which would be fun (I reckon we’d get on, he seems a laugh).
What drives you crazy?
Close-minded people. The kind of people that pre-judge me before they’ve ever met me or heard my side of a story, and go on rumours and reputation before they get to me. I’m totally fine with people disliking me after they’ve given me a chance, but everyone deserves the chance.
What makes you laugh?
Party-blowers. You can’t go wrong with a party-blower. In my opinion, it’s the funniest comedy prop. Give me an awkward silence and puncture it with a party-blower, and I’ll be so happy. It’s a birthday party, surprise – oh, but he’s walked in with his ex-girlfriend! Oh my god! Awkward silence …. and then the beautiful sound of one party blower, glowing slightly off-key at the end. That’s the best bit. That semi-tone of deflation. I love it.
If you had 3 wishes what would they be?
I’m SO glad you asked me this because I’ve always wanted to reveal my genius solution to this problem. There’s the obvious “you can’t wish for more than 3 wishes”, and if we look at the rules laid out by Aladdin, you can’t revive the dead or make people fall in love. BUT – you can ask FOR MORE GENIES! Yeah, check your loopholes, you know I’m right! So I’m going to wish for a thousand genies, each granting me an additional three wishes because that’s how genies work. And then the genies will be completely undermined because I’ll summon it and use one of my wishes to say, “get me a coke”.
What is the craziest thing you ever did?
I take a lot of spontaneous plane trips, that’s about as wild as I get. I flew to New York with Charlie, we decided we were gonna go on Sunday afternoon and flew out on Tuesday afternoon. That was fun.
What makes you feel embarrassed?
There’s nothing immediate that I can think of, honestly. I tend to deal with things pretty well. I’ve had isolated incidents where I’ve felt embarrassed, obviously, but there’s not one thing that you could rely on to do that.
What are your favorite web-sites (not including the ones that you are participate in)?
Haha, what a strange question. Not including the ones I participate in? That’s like asking me “what are your favourite films, apart from the ones you’ve seen?” I dunno, I obviously use YouTube a lot, I use wikipedia massively … if I’m not participating in a website, it’s because I don’t like it enough, so I don’t know what you want from me xD
What is the silliest thing you have ever done?
I once played my song Georgia naked on BlogTV because I thought it’d be funny. I think there’s a facebook group for that.
How would you make the world a better place?
Is it wrong that my first instinct was to say “make it so everyone likes me”? I dunno, I guess just calming people down would work, not letting stuff get to you. People need to chill and enjoy life more.
What is your biggest weakness?
I let my passions get in the way of my responsibilities.
Where will you be in 10 years?
Hahaha, I have no idea! Those questions don’t just involve seeing yourself older – they involve predicting what the whole planet will be like in ten years time. If you’d asked me ten years ago where I’d be now, YouTube hadn’t been invented, so there was NO WAY I’d have been able to possibly predict it. I think the beauty of life and the creative medium that I’m in is that it changes organically, and not knowing where I’ll be from one month to the next is massively liberating.
Write a question that you like to ask yourself and answer it.
I can’t think of anything I’d want to ask myself that I don’t already know the answer to, because I am myself me. The best I came up with is: “are you just putting off urinating because you want to finish the questionnaire?” And because I am me, I already knew the answer will be “yes”.
Who would you like to answer that Questionnaire?
Charlie McDonnell is wonderfully creative and insightful, but he’s also my best friend, so I probably know what he’d say. Dave from Blue Skies is amazingly witty, and I haven’t heard from him in ages, so he should do it. Then I’d get to read his thoughts
